Foodborne Illness

The food supply in the United States is remarkably safe. Nevertheless, fod can become contaminated with a variety of germs.

From May 1 to September 14, 2010, approximately 1,608 illnesses were reported that are likely to be associated with a salmonella outbreak in the United States.

Swine Flue

Swine Flu (H1N1 Influenza) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses. 2009 H1N1 is a new form of the H1N1 influenza virus causing illness in people.

The 2011-2012 flu season is ongoing. CDC continues to recommend vaccination for everyone 6 months and older this season.

C. Diff

Description: Clostridium difficile [klo-STRID-ee-um dif-uh-SEEL] is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and more serious intestinal conditions such as colitis.

Over the past several years nationwide, states have reported increased rates of C. difficile infection, noting more severe disease and an associated increase in mortality.

MSRA

Description: MRSA is a strain of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that's resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. MRSA can be fatal.

MRSA has been occurring most frequently among people in hospitals/healthcare facilities. Community-associated MRSA has also become a risk.
